Uranium: The Commodores [1955]

As Darrell Glenn of The Commodores croons, "Oil's old fashioned and gold don't glitter no more," the premature public embrace of the radioactive commodity is made abundantly clear. Ironically, the '50s uranium 'boom' outlasted The Commodores.

The Commodores featured the aforementioned Darrell Glenn as lead vocalist. Glenn's father, Artie, wrote Uranium for the band, although his most profitable copyright by far was Crying In The Chapel, first recorded by his son but later, of course, revived by Elvis. The Commodores' non-atomic Dot records were mainly covers of big hits and, apparently, these efforts were little noticed by the public.

Darrell Glenn was born in 1935 in Waco, Texas and was a regular on Bewley's Barn Dance on WBAP-TV in Ft. Worth. He later appeared on Big D Jamboree. Glenn was later co-owner of the Glendale label in 1959 and in 1968 was the A&R chief for Pompeii Records. Glenn also appeared on the labels Valley, RCA, RPM, NRC, Fashion, Twinkle, Robbee, Longhorn, Arlen, Columbia and Pompeii.

LYRICS/TRANSCRIPTION:
Uranium: The Commodores [1955]

Uranium, uranium, uranium, uranium
I'm gonna dig it some more!
Ooby ooby ooby ooby

Oil's old fashioned and gold don't glitter no more
Hey oil's old fashioned and the gold don't glitter no more
Well, diamonds so common, baby I'll tell you the score

Hey, packin' up the burro, I'm going to take a ride.
Hey, packin' up the burro, I'm going to take a hike.
Well, going to the mountains and make a uranium strike

I'm going to dig it some more!

Going to dig uranium, high on the mountain top
Hey, going to dig uranium, high on the mountain top
Well, the passion for my baby and the love, love, love never stop

Hey, packin' up the burro, I'm going to take a hike
Hey, I'm packin' up the burro, I'm going to take a hike
Well, going to the mountains and make a uranium strike

Uranium, uranium, uranium, uranium…
