West Of The Wall: Toni Fisher, and the Wayne Shanklin Orchestra [1962]
An overly emotional track with a defiant tone about a couple whose love is separated by the Berlin Wall, an indelible symbol of the Cold War that, oddly, is rarely mentioned in this genre of songs.
Torch singer 'Miss' Toni Fisher was born in Los Angeles, California in 1931 and is probably best remembered for her one top ten hit The Big Hurt released in 1959 which is considered to be one of the first songs to employ the production technique of ‘phasing.’ This distinctive sound, which was later used in many psychedelic songs of the ‘60s, was the result of vocals and instrumentation being processed in and out of a rhythmic fuzz tone. Another charting single by the artist was her cover of Irving Berlin's How Deep Is The Ocean. Miss Fisher later recorded for Columbia, Capitol and Smash Records in the 1960s and in 1973 retired to a ranch in Utah. Fisher died of a heart attack on February 12, 1999 in Hyrum, Utah.
Fisher also recorded an unreleased German version: of West Of The Wall as Dort in Berlin. The German lyrics were by Hermann Lüth (1921-1978). In 1992, Texas rock band Drain recorded a tribute song, The Ballad Of Miss Toni Fisher (Trans Syndicate TR 11).
