Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow: Unknown Announcer [1953]
This PSA is yet another friendly suggestion from the government to "plan now" for possible "emergency action." "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow" was a long standing civil defense slogan that was probably dreamed up by a low level copywriter working on behalf of the Advertising Council, an organization that the government worked closely with on civil defense propaganda (Note: The Ad Council's latest contract with the government is for The Department of Homeland Security). The admittedly catchy phrase proved to be so effective that at one point during the '50s Lil' Abner cartoonist Al Capp created a character named "Mr. Civil Defense" who appeared in a poster blaring the slogan. LYRICS/TRANSCRIPTION:
Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow: Unknown Announcer [1953] Announcer: Alert today, alive tomorrow! Plan now with your family for Civil Defense emergency action! Someday it may save your lives. Join, work and share together with others this knowledge of self help! Civil Defense – an American tradition!
