Bear Flew Over The Ocean, The: Jimmie Driftwood [1959]

This repetitive country song urges the 'bear' of the title (read: Khrushchev) to spread the word to the Russian public of America's free and peaceful people. Fat chance.

Jimmy Driftwood was born James Corbett Morris in Mountain View, Arkansas in 1907 to a family of locally prominent musicians and singers. His early career was in education, a field where he worked as teacher, principal and school superintendent. During his non-professional music career, Driftwood wrote songs and periodically attempted to break into country music. It was not until the folk revival of the late '50s that the artist met with any industry success. It was during this period that he adopted his stage name of 'Driftwood' (though some accounts suggest he originally chose the name 'Richwood' and that it was inadvertently changed to 'Driftwood' by someone in the studio). Driftwood is best known as a songwriter, although he did perform for a time on The Grand Ole Opry. His most popular compositions were The Battle Of New Orleans and Tennessee Stud which became big hits for Johnny Horton and Eddy Arnold respectively. In the late '60s and early '70s Driftwood returned to his educational roots and worked for the Ozark Folk Center, an organization devoted to preserving traditional folk music and culture. Driftwood died in 1998.
