A sweetly sung anti-Communist plea for the future of America's children. The Charades were a Nashville band, and Monument was a Nashville label by the time they recorded for it. The line-up is usually given as Allen Tanksley (keyboards, vocals), Owsley Manier (guitar & bass), Drew Nixon (drums & vocals), Jerry Smith (guitar), and Peyton Hoge (vocals). This song was written by their manager, One Eyed Jacks (Jackson Brown). They were a local supporting act to many of the big name shows that came through Nashville, and later recorded for Epic Records. LYRICS/TRANSCRIPTION:
Hammers And Sickles: The Charades [1966] Hammers and sickles on banners of red Hammers and sickles would see freedom dead Our children’s tomorrow they’d like to destroy Yes, hammers and sickles make very poor toys! Be strong, my love, and know that I love you Don’t cry as I leave you tonight I don’t want to go but I’m sure that you know That our country’s in danger and I’ve got to fight I love you and want a family A little girl and boy And for them, crayons and building blocks Hammers and sickles make very poor toys Hammers and sickles on banners of red Hammers and sickles would see freedom dead Our children’s tomorrow they’d like to destroy Yes, hammers and sickles make very poor toys! Green is the grass in summer meadows Gold are the leaves in fall I like walkin’ through fields of flowers Knowing that I can own it all Hammers and sickles on banners of red Hammers and sickles would see freedom dead Our children’s tomorrow they’d like to destroy Yes, hammers and sickles make very poor toys! (Repeat and fade out) The Charades [1966]
